Inside Occupy Wall Street LA …… Continued Tolerance in Los Angeles As Occupiers Play It Smart And By The Book

Monday Oct 10 2001 Downtown Los Angeles

By now we’ve all seen the videos from NY and last night from Boston where the cops wade into crowds of people and a few officers (like in NY) come out swinging, just like the hired Bouncers of the powers that be that they are.

But in LA the police again move through the crowds not nervous, not pensive but vigilant and seemingly somewhat relaxed. There is NO mass show of force by the Los Angeles city government to KEEP THEM IN LINE needed so far. WHY?? Because I have seen that the folks in OWS LA are watching out for each other and doing their best to be sure individuals that are potential problems are handled quickly and as sensitively as possible from within. They are keenly aware that their security volunteers (Volunteers of America as it were) isolate trouble makers or though that post potential threats to the whole show as simple as the young deaf man I saw hanging out by the Welcome Tent hawking candy for $1.00. I waved him on as he approached me, as I really do not NEED any Peanut M&Ms in my diet right now. I was amazed as a young woman bolted out of the welcome tent to ask the young man to leave, trying to explain to him that it is AGAINST LA CITY CODE to solicit sales on city property and it could get them ALL run-off the City Hall lawns.

Of course being deaf he just reacted like he was being hassled. Another volunteer quickly realized the communication issue and got a pen and paper and wrote it down for him to read. He finally got the message and caught the vibe and put away his hustle and wandered around checking it out. I saw him on the North Lawn on the other side of City Hall from where the welcome tent is located and he was taking it all in without trying to hustle the crowd.

At the General Assembly meeting later that evening the head of the KITCHEN COMMITTEE address the crowd to inform them that the LA Health Department was regularly checking in on them. She laid out some of Must Observe rules to eating in the People’s Kitchen (Food Tent). On is a simple as do NOT grab food off the table as a volunteer, with hairnet and gloves, must serve it to you or it is a potential violation that could get them ALL the boot. She also let the crowd know that there is an existing security camera now focused and monitored 24 / 7 on the food tent area. She once again IMPLORED those using the OLA food service to play it BY THE BOOK!

Smart, Eh? These guys and gals ARE there to stay. More on that in the next installment of Inside Occupy Wall Street LA.
