Idaho Real Estate Developer Sentenced In $1.8 Million Tax Fraud

BOISE – Glenn E. Mosell, 48, of Eagle, Idaho, was sentenced in federal court today to 15 months in prison followed by one year of supervised release for filing a false federal tax return, U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson announced. Chief U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill also ordered Mosell to pay $199,887 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. Mosell pleaded guilty to the charge on February 8, 2011.

According to court documents, Mosell failed to report approximately $1.8 million of income on tax returns he filed for 2004, 2005 and 2006. The income was generated from sales commissions, the sale of real estate and from a lawsuit.

At sentencing, Judge Winmill stated that “underpayment of taxes is a serious national problem.”

“This is a stark reminder that there are serious and significant consequences for those who willfully fail to pay their fair share of taxes. Paying taxes is the civic duty of every American, and those who commit tax fraud increase the tax burden for all honest taxpayers,” said Sean Sowards, Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigation, for the State of Idaho.

The case was investigated by the Boise office of the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Division.
